Curriculum Overview

At Co-op Academy Priesthorpe we provide an ambitious and exciting knowledge-rich curriculum filled with opportunities to experience new things, learn, grow, reflect and question the world around them.

We continually evaluate and adapt what we offer to ensure it is coherent, high quality and provides inclusive opportunities for all with the thread of the co-operative values and principles running through it.

Our curriculum is designed to ensure all of our students:

  • develop knowledge and cultural capital to understand, engage with and influence the world around them
  • achieve exceptional outcomes regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or economic circumstances
  • have high aspirations and know how they can achieve them
  • know how to learn successfully, and keep themselves safe and healthy
  • are community minded with a willingness to involve themselves and volunteer
  • have had the opportunity to engage with employees and members of the Co-op to assist in their preparation for work and later education and employment choices in life
  • are successful in entering the world of training, education or employment equipped with the necessary skills, knowledge, resilience, confidence and self-esteem to succeed as active members of society

In developing our curriculum offer we carefully considered a number of key questions.

What do we want our curriculum to be? (Intent)

  • Exciting – filled with opportunities to experience and learn new things, grow, reflect and question
  • Knowledge-rich – evidence-based and driven by research, underpinned by the principles of cognitive science
  • Ambitious – leading to exceptional knowledge and outcomes for all
  • Empowering – preparing students for the world of work and to actively contribute to society
  • Inclusive – meets the needs and aspirations of all learners
  • Inspiring – a love of learning within and beyond the classroom, which continues throughout adult life
  • Relevant – to our local community

How do we want it to be structured? (Intent)

  • Absolute clarity around the core knowledge at every stage of the learning journey.
  • Absolute clarity around the ‘gateway knowledge’ required to access each chunk of learning.
  • Thoughtful and considered sequencing that is informed by expert subject knowledge, research and cognitive science.
  • Skilful assessments that provide clear information to inform planning and secure strong progress.

What does it look like in the classroom? (Implementation)

  • Expert subject and pedagogical knowledge that delivers;
  • An exploration of core and gateway concepts, using methods of delivery that are rooted in the science behind the acquisition of knowledge, including first class guided, deliberate and independent practice.
  • Skillful checking for understanding through effective questioning, including ‘pitstops’, that is designed to anticipate errors and tackle misconceptions head on.
  • Reinforcement of knowledge that deepens understanding and promotes the transition from novice to expert learners, with fluent comprehension and application of specialist vocabulary. The transition is supported by research based strategies of rehearsal, including retrieval practice and elaboration.

What impact will it have on the students?

  • Exceptional outcomes for all
  • New experiences
  • Inquisitive leaners, keen to find out more
  • Able to make an active contribution to society

You will find more information about how each subject area is bringing our knowledge rich offer to life. This information includes an intent statement for each subject, which sets out the ambition of the curriculum and broadly, what students can expect to learn.

It also includes an implementation statement, which provides an overview of how we deliver the curriculum in each subject area. And, finally a statement around the expected impact of our curriculum. This summarises our student’s entitlement, what it is they should expect to be able to do and know through engaging with our curriculum offer.

Co-op Academy Priesthorpe

EBbacc Statement (January 2023)

The government’s ambition is to see 75% of pupils studying the EBacc subject combination at GCSE by 2022, and 90% by 2025.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/english-baccalaureate-ebacc/english-baccalaureate-ebacc

The EBacc is:

  • English language and literature
  • maths
  • the sciences
  • geography or history
  • a language

The rationale is to emphasise the importance of subjects considered to be academically rigorous to enhance the choices available to students at post-16 and in Higher Education.

The Co-op Academies Trust  and Governing Body at Co-op Academy Priesthorpe have considered the importance of the EBacc subjects in relation to our curriculum intent and wider curriculum principles. The agreed position of the academy in relation to the EBacc and other GCSE/VTQ subject options in Key Stage 4 is as follows:

At Co-op Academy Priesthorpe we provide an ambitious and exciting knowledge-rich curriculum filled with opportunities to experience new things, learn, grow, reflect, and question the world around them.

We continually evaluate and adapt what we offer to ensure it is coherent, high quality and provides inclusive opportunities for all with the thread of the co-operative values and principles running through it.

Students follow courses in the core subjects of maths, English (Literature and Language), Science (Trilogy or Triple) and select a further four GCSE subjects. We actively encourage our students to study a combination of EBacc subjects, as well as other academic, creative, and vocational courses to ensure their studies are balanced and that they reflect the students’ interests, talents, and aspirations for the future.

We are committed to ensuring that as many pupils as possible study the EBacc suite of qualifications. To this end, we ensure that:

  • All pupils have full access to EBacc options when making GCSE choices. Every pupil is able to study EBacc options.
  • The opportunity to study community languages, such as Urdu.
  • All pupils whose prior attainment and progress at KS3 suggest that they may ‘achieve’ the EBacc suite of qualifications at GCSE Grade 5 or above are strongly encouraged to choose these options. This is communicated to pupils in assemblies, 1:1 interviews and via communication with their parents/carers.
  • All pupils are informed of the benefits of studying the EBacc suite of subjects.
  • All pupils are given access to high-quality teaching in EBacc subjects in Key Stage 3.
