Curriculum Intent 

Through dance we challenge students to strive and to excel; we provide an enjoyable, ambitious and exciting knowledge rich curriculum that equips all students with the desire to experience new things, learn, grow, reflect and question the world around them. The dance curriculum is designed to:

  • Develop students’ creativity, self-confidence, artistic appreciation and cultural capital.
  • Ensure that students are developing social skills, teamwork, communication and self-awareness.
  • Develop students’ self-confidence and empathy, refined through regular opportunities to choreograph their own compositions and perform to their peers. 
  • Have high aspirations and know how to achieve them 

Curriculum Implementation

Expert subject and pedagogical knowledge that delivers;

  •  An exploration of core and gateway concepts, using methods of delivery that are rooted in the science behind the acquisition of knowledge, including first class guide, deliberate and independent practice.
  • Skillful checking for understanding through effective questioning, including “pitstops”that are designed to anticipate the errors and tackle misconceptions head on.
  • Reinforcement of knowledge that deepens understanding and promotes transition from novice to expert learners, with fluent comprehension and application of specialist vocabulary.  The transition is supported by research based strategies of rehearsal, including retrieval practice and elaboration.

Curriculum Intent 

  • The subject intent is delivered in dance through high quality planning that has clear end points focused on the core knowledge required at each stage of the learning journey and is skillfully sequenced to address gaps and secure strong progress.
  • In the classroom students are able to express themselves creatively and are encouraged to “think outside of the box” developing  inquisitive learners.
  • Through the exposure to new dance genres, excursions to the theatre and the opportunities to work with professional dancers pupils are able to emerge themselves new experiences.
  • Prepare students for the world of work, well informed about relevant career opportunities in the Performing Arts Sector.
  • Empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to make an active contribution to society.
