Curriculum Intent 

Geography involves the study of our planet. The interactions between the human and physical environments make for an exciting study and highlight the power of the natural environment and ingenuity and resilience of the human spirit in coping with adversity and change. 

Studying our dynamic world through a knowledge – rich curriculum enables young people to develop a deep sense of their own past, present and future. Geography is an exciting and challenging subject with countless opportunities for students to apply key themes and theories to the real world, relevant to our students. Through this and the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, students are able to become problem solvers, analysts and evaluate solutions to problems as well as develop their literacy and numeracy skills. Therefore empowering students to navigate and understand the complexities of life with clarity, compassion and integrity. 
To that end, our intention is simple; to deliver high quality knowledge – rich geography education that inspires a curiosity and fascination about the world in which we live, for all.

Curriculum Implementation

Expert subject and pedagogical knowledge that delivers;

  • An exploration of core and gateway concepts, using methods of delivery that are rooted in the science behind the acquisition of knowledge, including first class guided, deliberate and independent practice.
  • Key concepts and knowledge are interweaved throughout the curriculum to reinforce knowledge, deepening understanding to promote the transition from novice to expert learners, with fluent comprehension and application of specialist geographic vocabulary. The transition is supported by research based strategies of rehearsal, including retrieval practice and elaboration.
  • Skilful checking for understanding through effective questioning, including ‘pitstops’, that is designed to anticipate errors and tackle misconceptions head on.

  • Develop a sense of place through detailed investigation at a variety of scales, from the local to global.
  • Appreciate the diverse and multicultural world we live in and be accepting of all views and values. 
  • Develop a range of skills to explore pressing global issues such as climate change. 
  • Interpret and manipulate numerical information. 
  • Critically evaluate problems, drawing on a range of sources to identify solutions. 
  • Draw upon a range of sources to conduct independent enquiries, knowing which the most appropriate sources to use are. 
  • Develop an interest in the wider world, sparking their curiosity and sense of adventure.
