PE

Curriculum Intent

Through Physical Education we encourage students to strive and to excel. We provide an ambitious, exciting knowledge-rich curriculum for students, filled with opportunities to experience new things, learn, grow and reflect and question the world around them. Through the Physical Education curriculum we,

  • Promote the importance of lifelong participation and the positive impact on physical and emotional wellbeing.
  • Develop a range of physical competences and wider life skills; such as co-operation, creativity, communication, teamwork and leadership.
  • Develop cultural capital and make links between PE, Sport and the wider world, including co-operative values and learning in other subjects, to recognise the relevance to their own lives and apply this knowledge in different contexts.
  • Achieve exceptional outcomes regardless of age, gender, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or economic circumstances.
  • Develop collaborative, interpersonal and leadership skills through a range of team games. This will contribute to life skills and underpin employability

Curriculum Implementation

Expert subject and pedagogical knowledge that delivers;

  • An exploration of core and gateway concepts, using methods of delivery that are rooted in the science behind the acquisition of knowledge, including first class guided, deliberate and independent practice.
  • Skillful checking for understanding through effective questioning, including ‘pitstops’, that is designed to anticipate errors and tackle misconceptions head on.
  • Reinforcement of knowledge that deepens understanding and promote the transition from novice to expert learners, with fluent comprehension and application of specialist vocabulary. The transition is supported by research based strategies of rehearsal, including retrieval practice and elaboration.
  • We promote the importance of health and fitness through all aspects of Physical Education encouraging wider participation.

Curriculum Impact

The subject intent is delivered in Physical Education through high quality planning that has clear end points focussed on the core knowledge required at each stage of the learning journey and is skilfully sequenced to address gaps and secure strong progress:

  • Outcomes show great progress for all learners and we develop inquisitive learners, keen to find out more about key concepts in the sphere of Physical Education.
  • Students know how to keep themselves safe and healthy and engage with Physical activity outside the curriculum offer.
  • Students become more fluent, adventurous and confident in explaining their performance in PE.
  • Students are prepared for the world of work, well informed about relevant career opportunities in the field of sport, fitness, health and leisure.
  • Students are empowered with the knowledge and skills needed to make an active contribution to society.
